The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), through its Director General who also serves as the Registrar of Seafarers, Mr. Mohamed Salum, has conducted an inspection of infrastructure and teaching and learning facilities at the Dar es Salaam Basic Maritime Training Institute — Dar es Salaam Maritime Training Academy (DMTA), located on Nkrumah Street in the city of Dar es Salaam on January 13, 2026.
The institution has applied for accreditation to offer basic maritime training courses (Basic Safety Training).
The maritime sector in the country has received fresh momentum through private sector initiatives to establish training institutions aimed at enhancing basic skills in maritime transport.
Mr. Salum stated that Tanzania has a large population of young people who, by taking advantage of opportunities to enroll at DMTA, can build a new path for their lives.
“Tanzania has oceans and lakes which, if properly utilized, will contribute to increasing employment opportunities for youth and reducing unemployment. I sincerely congratulate the DMTA leadership for establishing this institution. I also call upon capable Tanzanians to come forward and establish similar institutions in areas around Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and other locations,” said Mr. Salum.
The institution will offer short courses and will operate using curricula that comply with guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as well as the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 as amended.
TASAC has been satisfied with these initial steps, and the final process is now underway for the institution to be granted accreditation to officially commence the training.
